REVIEW: Nintendo Game Boy micro 20th Anniversary Edition

The most-baby gaming device of all baby gaming devices! The version that Geeks.com sent us for a review of the Nintendo Game Boy micro is the beautiful 20th Anniversary Ed. (Red & Gold). Read on for more.

In the small box we found the Game Boy micro portable gaming system, an instruction booklet, a power adapter and a drawstring carrying bag. After about 2 hours of charging the device for the first time we were able to test it further.

The red casing with gold faceplate, which signifies the fact that it's the special 20th Anniversary Edition, looks very sleek. The device is very small and very light, just like a cellphone, easily carried on any pocket. It features the classic Nintendo NES-style controller, a 2-inch color screen with backlight and adjustable brightness, a 32-bit 16.8-MHz ARM processor, a built-in rechargeable Li-lon battery with 5 hrs typical battery life (in our tests it managed 4.5 hours which is very good considering the size of the battery), a standard 3.5mm stereo headphone jack, a volume up/down button, the A & B classic buttons, Start, Select, L, R buttons, a directional pad and the On/Off switch.

The Micro supports Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance Video cartridges, and we were able to test with over 15 titles. There was no slowdown and the resolution of the games is low enough that the small-sized screen is not a problem. It is a technological miracle that a device that small can play all these Gameboy games without sweating!

The Micro is able play multi-player games with other Gameboy devices, either through a wired adapter, or the special wireless adapter sold by Nintendo. For all intents and purposes, while the size of the device is small, the device is not limited in any way.

If we had to write down a problem of the device that its mono speaker. Instead of placing the speaker on top of the A/B buttons, they placed it below. Each time you will be playing a game, your fingers many times will be covering the speaker output and this will result to having no sound until you remove your fingers again. The placement of the speaker is indeed an unfortunate fact, but it doesn't take away the fun!

At just $46 this is a steal, because this is a collector's edition device able to play over 500 Gameboy games (games that some start at just $5). While Christmas is not here yet, it is always an amazing gift to young ones.
